Thank you for taking the time to consider joining Cambridge Housing Society as Chair of our Board.

We are a dynamic and diverse housing association providing affordable, quality homes and support to enable people and communities to overcome challenges, take opportunities, and develop their ability to achieve their aspirations.

With a history going back almost 100 years, our focus is on people who are vulnerable or on the lowest incomes within Cambridgeshire and its surrounding authorities: we are proud of our track record of developing local solutions to local problems.

Our new Chair will join CHS at a time that offers significant opportunity and challenge:

  • Opportunity – to take the organisation forward following a recent very positive regulatory process alongside our three yearly governance review, giving CHS a strong bill of health and clear agenda forward. At the right moment, we need to introduce a digitally efficient, tenant-focused reshaping of our core housing service.
  • Challenge – to navigate CHS, with Board members and senior staff, through the pressures of inflation, shortfalls in public sector funding, zero carbon requirements and impact of rising costs of living on tenants and employees.

So, CHS will need to make the right decisions on our services and the best way to protect them and the support they provide for our vulnerable tenants. Sustaining a viable business plan to ensure CHS's long term future will be top of the agenda for a new Chair.

We are looking to appoint a Chair who already has experience of chairing a Board and who can offer proven leadership skills as well as excellent commercial and business awareness. You’ll have an assured understanding of how to identify and mitigate risk in business planning and ensure that our strategic plans are well-informed, pragmatic and achievable.

About CHS and our Governance

Further information about CHS is available on the Chair Recruitment microsite and on our website at www.chsgroup.org.uk

The CHS Board currently comprises ten members, and there is an expectation that all members will also join one of five committees, depending on their skills and experience. CandCD (Cambridge and County Developments Limited) is governed by a separate Executive Board.

If you think you have the skills, knowledge and, importantly, commitment to steer us on the next phase of CHS’s journey, we would very much like to hear from you.
